New Golf R

Hi all,

I am totally new to VW and I just ordered a new Golf R for my daughter and son to share. Here are the specs:-

White, manual, cloth seats, sat nav and adaptive chassis control.

My daughter insisted it be manual instead of dsg and my son was happy with either despite lots of city driving. I am glad that my daughter wanted manual and apart from saving 2500 I also preferred manual transmission. I taught my daughter how to drive my Honda S2000 and we used to drive for hours in it when she was on her L plates.

I sure hope I made the right decision and VW is totally new to me.

I just wanted to know why so many people are purchasing the DSG transmission. I was really surprise that my daughter insisted I purchase a manual transmission while my son was slightly favouring the DSG. Most of the VW dealers tells me that 90% of their sales are DSG. I am really surprise at the large amount of DSG sales. I would have thought a high performance car like that would be better suited for manual transmission.

But the DSG outperforms the manual... (I'm not going to put a whole heap of qualifications in here about driver skill etc, but DSG will give a more consistent and generally better performance result for most drivers).

DSG is not like a normal slushbox auto, it's two regular cog boxes (one has even gears, one has odd gears) with two clutches. While in one gear, the DSG will have pre-selected the next gear, then it simply disengages one clutch while engaging the other to change gears. This results in a very quick gear change (faster than a human) without the power suck of a traditional auto.

Lots of performance/supercars now use a similar system either as an option or as the only transmission.

DSG is the obvious choice - quicker changes, more economical, better resale.. A bit less driver involvement but the manual box is nothing special. The thing i like most are the downchanges, heaps faster and less awkward.

manual all the way for me ! love em and always will . driven plenty of dsg box cars in the vag range and replaced a few too not to say there bad hell no very good box function well and feel great to drive when your on the boil but how often do your really drive your dsg box to the full potential and get the most out of it ? each to their own opinion to this debate i suppose

I ordered the DSG purley because my wife preffered an auto. She gets to drive it in "D" while I get to play with the paddle shift, sport mode or if I'm just obeying the law, be lazy and leave it in D also. Seems more flexible to me.

I have a 6 month wait on mine... you guys have the same?

Guess it depends on the model spec and if others are available in Aust.
When I purchased my 2nd R32 I had to have it custom built to spec in Germany and wait 3 months. (won't mention the double or triple price costs for mod if decide to play with the car)

On a side note to the original post, but why the cloth trim? Considering most places can't drive R like can drive when in UK and Europe probably better spending money on GTi getting all the top end specs. R deserves to be leather
