Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • yep .. newbie with a Bora question ..

Hey all .. good to find a forum for these great cars .. I just bought a 03' 4 motion Bora .. nice car .. all the toys inside .. but it seems to make a growling noise coming from back end when I turn at low speed .. mostly to the left. Dealer gave me a usual BS story about fluid something something .. I bought the car anyway knowing I would need to fix this as it had low kms and is in perfect condition.

Is it most likely CV joints? or could it be many other things .. like ??

Cheers .. hope to see some of you on the fist run we get on. This is a great fast little car and I will want to drive it as much as I can

I am looking for a good mechanic to diagnose this problem so I can tell the dealer what he needs to fix under warranty and also for future servicing and mods. Is the bloke in Burwood the best choice?

    Cheers all

Not sure if you know but the Bora has a Haldex unit in the back, same as the TT/S3 and others. When slip occurs at the front wheels, drive is then sent to the rear.

The oil and filter for the Haldex must be replaced at the specified intervals to keep it working. There is also a controller on top of the unit and it is possible to get "performance" controllers which alter the characteristics of the split in drive, making it a bit more rear endy, for want of a better description.

Goodfella recently went on the rollers with his 4-mo and discovered that his was in fact a 2wd car. The controller had quit. He got a secondhand one fitted to fix the problem.

My advice would be to get the car scanned for faults by someone with VCDS/VAG-COM and go from there.

Also check that the Haldex has been serviced when it should be. If there's no evidence to say it's been done, chase it up.

      Gavin

EDIT I am in Melbourne this afternoon and leaving Sunday around mid-day and I have VCDS.

CV's are for the front axles. Gav's advice is good, get the Halidex system checked.

There's CVs at the back too on these Ben. It's independent.

given it only happens when turning, CV's are a prime candidate
