Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 89 Transporter Gearbox (Problem?)

    My first post. Help!
I have an 89 Transporter which has become one of the family. Earlier this year it sadly spat off a head stud. Thinking it wa sthe best thing for me, I finally arranged with a local VW specialist to exchange the motor with one from a vehicle he had. It was a similar model Synchro.

The motor goes OK, though not as lively as my old motor, but since I picked it up, it has two problems: some gearbox grumbling and extra oil leakining from the gearbox.

The gearbox is making grumbling noises a lot of the time at rest when I select First gear or reverse. It tends to go away if I let the clutch out and get moving.
It also happens often when I come to a halt and put my foot on the clutch, which will usually be in second gear.

I am sure I never heard any noise like this before the exchange motor went in. Any suggestions on what might be wrong? Could it be something out of alignment after the exchange, or perhaps something else different from the Synchro motor? Or is it just coincidence and I am up for gearbox repairs?
