  • First post - possible purchase of GTI or Octavia

    Hi all,

This is my first post... I don't have a VW yet, but I'm looking to perhaps get one, hence I've been browsing the forums.

As a bit of background - I currently have an Astra Turbo. However we are expecting a baby in December, and the Astra is a 2-door car. Hence I've been looking around for a replacement.

The Golf GTI was my first candidate. The 5-door would be more practical, but still a relatively compact and fun car to drive. However the missus thinks it is too small inside. She prefers the Tiguan.

We test drove both, and I preferred the GTI. I appreciate the space and practicality of the Tiguan, but it just felt boring to drive. I felt a bit disconnected as a driver, in comparison to the GTI.

Now a third option is the Skoda Octavia RS wagon. It's got the space, but I haven't had a chance to drive it yet. Went to Steve Jarvin Skoda in Burwood Sydney and he didn't have any available for me to drive. I really wonder how the RS drives.

Anyway, that's my situation. I'll post more specific questions in the appropriate forum sections so hopefully I can get a bit more info.

If it were me, i would be choosing a Tiguan or the RS Wagon.

The wagon has extra space and still has all the creature comforts of the GTI

The tiguan for future family soft-road trips and with an APR remap to 189kw it definitely makes you feel more connected as a driver.
It is also a bit cheaper than the GTI

A mate of mine has an RS wagon and he loves that he can fit an 8Kg washing machine in the back of it as well as do 15 (and a bit) second laps of Wakefield Park (a race circuit in Goulburn, NSW). Might be a bit more practical for a family..

I wouldn't mind the Jetta, except it comes across as quite a dated model now. Also, we all know that a replacement is coming next year.

When I was at the VW dealer, it looked like they weren't even interested in selling the Jetta. They had none of them on the showroom floor.

The Golf Wagon - I just don't like the look of it. I think if I were to get the Golf Wagon, I might as well get the Tiguan.

            I`d get the Octavia.
Probably good deals around at this time of year and the build quality and performance is great.
