Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW About to Order Golf R but..

... do i get DSG or manual?

I haven't owned a VW before but the time has come. I have always driven a manual and assumed i would get a manual R. However, I drove a DSG today and quite liked it.

Do most GTI and R owners drive DSG?

Looking forward to ordering one soon and join the waiting list!!

    Cheers
    Simon

I have a DSG, only because I couldn't get a manual in my R32 at the time I bought it....
If I was to buy again I would still get a manual, the DSG is great, but a manual is a MAN-ual....

Going on 5 weeks now with the old man's DSG GTI (MkV) (borrowed). Not liking it all. Miss having a conventional manual to drive. For me the involvement and joy of driving has been lost (soon to be fixed though).

Unless you're right up it the DSG goes straight for the highest gear it can and then if you want to overtake it takes way too long to drop down and get on it. Also in everyday driving the S mode too jerky and D mode has the issues from my previous comment. Also unless they put some proper leaver style gear changers behind the steering wheel, the button paddles also make me feel isolated from the car, a bit like pushing buttons on a game controller.

For sure though DSG can change gear quicker than you can and will accelerate faster because of it. After 3 years Dad is still not a convert and is considering a conventional manual next time.

Others have different opinions and swear by it and don't have the loss of involvement/joy thing that I'm talking about, and that's ok too. At the end of the day take both the pro and con comments on board and then weigh them up and maybe take a few more test drives (maybe see if you can organise to have a car for a few days or so and try varying conditions). It'll be your car and you'll be the one who has to live with it at the end of the day.

Oh and welcome to the forums.

        Cheers,
        Trent

So I guess mines a WOmanual.
It's cheaper, too - paid for my leather.
