Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW 118TSI R92, 95,98 fuel and APR issues

Have just spent all afternoon reading about blown 118 and massive discussion re fuel quality.
Have ordered Golf 118TSI and really nervous, but hoping VW will restore reputation.
    Anyway
Was informed by dealer at start of looking at golf, that it is OK to use R92 for short period, if R95 not available.
(Living in country area) However return to R95 asap, otherwise the ECU would drop performance to accomodate R92, and would have to be returned to service dept for resetting.
Also, in later discussion did tell me R98 much better, as better fuel economy results. Happy to say BP R98 as well as Caltex available here. Will only use R98
But also note many users change settings of ECU with something called APR. (For more performance?)
Now I am puzzled, after the big concern re reliability, and take care to use best fuel, why modify operating parameters by a third party? Apart from warrenty issues, is this saying VW do not know how to design their engine? Or is it a trade off for performance against fuel economy?

As standard the car will adapt down to 91 and back up to 98. You wont need to go back to the dealer car learns the fuel and adjust itself.

APR is a tuning company. Their product remaps the ECU to allow for more power by changing the turbo boost, ignition timing, and air fuel ratios. They claim your 118kw will become 151kw.

You will probably use more fuel and you wont be able to run 95 or 91 fuel unless you get the option to switch programs back to factory.

Check out their website APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.

You'd best check with the insurance company as most don't like modified cars.

      Gee thanks
This helps my confidence re purchase, and in respect to trust in dealer.
But, if ECU can adapt to 92, why all the fuss re fuel and blowup? It DOES seem as if problem due to knock sensor calibration.
      Will still use R98
I know Golf is highly regarded, but did not realise the emphasis as a performance care till found this forum
      Now the long wait!
