Can someone PLEASE PLEASE help me.... With what they think may be going on and what it may cost....
So I just drove home from work up the highway tonight and my car was gutless! Even shifting to 3rd up the hills my tacho and speed were going backwards! There were no noises, but the powerband seemed a little less smooth than usual - not badly, but not silky smooth and there was no evidence of the turbo coming onto boost (however its got the std k03 so theres never really noticible lag anyway). I drove it slowly home... gave it a little test from stop start and I guess it took 15s to get close to 100km/hr. All the lights/gauges were normal. When I got home, I looked in the engine bay and the turbo was glowing red! Like massively glowing red! Oh **** I thought..
The night before when I got home, I noticed an unusual smell but thought nothing of it.
Also, there is a small leak in the water pump sys so i've been topping it up occassionally whilst I waited to have a new pump etc one fitted next wk. Other than that it is all std, healthy and well serviced. I was going to change the oil this w/e (6000k's since last change).
The turbo was rebuilt/replaced 2 yrs ago (I can't work out which, but it had a new core fitted and the exhaust housing replaced with a second hand one... the reciept is written so badly and it also mentions 'turbo' so it's hard to tell if it was replaced or rebuilt) - this was done before I owned the car.
Can you guys pls tell me what you think?? I'm newish to turbos... I was thinking potentially the cat converter, maybe fuel filter side, totally blown turbo, blocked oil feed lines (but I was hoping not this cos I don't drive hard and always let it cool and change oil at 5-6k kms)... I just don't really know. But basically it's getting spinning and getting massively hot but not cooled. It's a 2000 1.8t GP model A4.
