Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Recent Recall Discussion

    Hi all,

have been a VERY happy owner of a 118tsi since November last year - 8000KM on the clock now.

Of course i am very interested in the latest news about a recall for 118tsi s.

It said in the Cars Guide article that it involves a software update that among other things effects the knock sensor.

The problems seems to be related to fuel, based on the symptoms.

Enough has already been said about the superiority of 98octane etc so I want to addres the point that has been made about recommendations by VW.

Some owners are saying that VW recommends 95octane, however.....the manual lists 95 octane as the minimum standard.......i would read that as....."if nothing better is available, then its ok to use 95octane to top up a tank that already has at least some 98octane in it"

Using nothing other than 95octane is a different story.......i do agree that VW should have made this a little clearer.....they don't really explain it well in my opinion.

However...we are talking about a 1.4 litre engine that has the power and torque of a good 2.5 and a low end torque that rivals some big V6s and even V8s (i.e 240Nm peak at around 1800rpm)

The engine achieves this through direct injection and 2 forms of forced induction, more to the point the compression ratio is 10.0:1, thats about 20% higher than say a corolla......high compression ratio usually means that you need high octane fuel to prevent.....misfiring, pinging etc.

This is a highly tuned engine, it needs to be run in properly, as per the manual (how many people do that?) and it needs to be fed properly.

VW should make that more clear i think, then they would have fewer complaints??

Other than that........based on the cars i've driven, you'dhave to spend double to getting anything better.......payed $32 400 driveaway (brand new with 8km on the clock after my test drive). A mercedes C-class, which i found as good will easily hit the $60K mark.

    HIr Stefan,
    Congrats on the new purchase.

I too would have expected VW to make that point a little clearer, although plainly obvious too me.

Another importanat thing is to use fully synthetic oil.
Like you say they are a "highly tuned" engine.

    Enjoy!
