Been watching these forums for a while. Time to jump in.

I would say the GTI unless you are really in need of the AWD system (i.e. for track days)

Everything I read keeps labeling the R as watered down and soft.

That plus with the large price difference, I don't see any reason to go the R instead of the GTI
