Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD Hi from Brissie.

    G'day all,

Just joined the forum to look for some info before we buy our first VW - we're looking at the TDI Tiguan. I've test driven the auto and the manual, and I'm pretty sure we'll go with the manual.

Are their any problems or quirks with the TDI Tiguan that I should be aware of before I fork out for one? Most reviews I've read rate it highly. Any info you can give me, good or bad, would be much appreciated.

Hopefully I've posted this in the right place - if I should be asking my questions elsewhere let me know!
    Cheers
    Sean

    Welcome aboard.

Take a look in the Tig section, there's a fair amount of discussion there on the variants available. In summary, TDI = economy and TSI = performance.

      Welcome to the forums.

I have heard of the Manual TDI's having some stalling issues due to the low rev range but it could be casued by the driver, not the car.
Also have to take a look at the diesel section of the forum and look into the DPF (Diesel particulate filter) and EGR (exhaust gas recircularisation) systems. as they are going to be the biggest issues.

The TSI gets quite reasonable fuel economy so if you are going to be using it mainly for short trips or city driving i would suggest the 125TSI.

The fuel economy thread in the tiguan section is also a good read.

What would you be using the Tig for just out of curriosity?

Also let us know when you make your choice and we can point out some good dealers and some not as good (starts with an A)

It'll be used through the week as a daily driver for the missus (short 10 - 20 minute trips, not the best for a deisel I know), and on weekends to take us out of Brissie as often as possible - unless we're camping, then we take our Defender!

The 2 I've test driven were from the dealer starting wth A, and to be honest we've already had some problems just in organising test drives! Who would you recommend?
            Cheers

I went through Highway Auto (Springwood) and they gave me a pretty reasonable deal considering i had no options to negotiate with.
Tried to go through the "A" Dealer and they didn't even get back to me even after i told them i had the cash ready to go that day.
If you need to know the contact i used there just shoot me a pm or i will check on here.

Also consider checking out the dealers on the forum, they may be a bit further away but you should get a good discount through them.

For your use, I would be considering a 125TSI as the short trips aren't good on the DPF in the diesel.
You also end up saving 3k straight away off the RRP.
The fuel economy is pretty reasonable for the 125 anyway with some guys getting 7.5l/100km in the fuel economy thread.

I've heard good things from Highway and the service team is also pretty good there. Ultimately though, I'd recommend Southport. I bought my car there and I can't say a single word against them.

Not to mention it's got far more tuning capabilities, should you decide to go down that road. Even at stock, the Tiguan's got some nice grunt to it (we've got a 125TSI).

Welcome to the forum, be sure to come along to some meets/cruises to get to know the Brisbane crew

Welcome mate, it'd be great to see some more Tigs on here, even cooler to see some done up ones. I reckon they'd be a great car to get around in, I'd love a 147TSI (I think that's it). As Maca said, come along to a meet and say G'day, we won't bite.

                    I think a 190TSI would be best

And speak for yourself about the biting.

Thanks for the welcome guys, and the trip invite.

I guess when it comes to buying, we'll probably go through whoever gives us the best deal. Still waiting for a price from the guys we did the test drive through ... they really don't seem very interested in the sale. Maybe they're makng too much money and want to give the other dealers a chance at some business ...

Might see if I can take a 125TSI for a spin at some stage this weekend.
                      Cheers

I would reccomend Highway auto for pricing as they were the best i could find in Brisbane.
Let me know if you want the contact of the saleperson i spoke to.

See if you can contact some of the dealers on here to get a good discount.
Even if you have to pay for shipping it could end up cheaper.

I reccomend taking the 125 out for a spin as it is completely different to the subdud 103TDI.

From a diesel perspective, I'd have to say the future tune up options for the 103kw TDI are very limited given it's lower ability to handle heat over the 125kw TDI 2.0, which has far more potential. Even chipping the 103 up to 125 is something I'd be wary of, and mate I love a mod or three. I'd also have to say as much as I LOVE my manual TDI, it's a busy gearbox, and I can't see too many wives liking the situation! DSG for the win there.

Given the shorter trips, and the fact you have a Landie for camping etc, I'd vote for the TSI.

Yeah, I think I'm going to take a good look at the TSI.

If we do end up deciding on a TDI, how often and how long does it need a decent run? If we are taking it for a hour's run on the freeway each weekend, would that keep it happy?
                            Cheers

We've ordered a Tig! Mountain Grey TDI manual, should be picking it up within a week.

For those that are looking at Tig's, there appears to be a promotion on during May - we saved close to $2000. The promotion only applies to cars in stock during May.

                              I'm a bit excited - haven't had a new car for nearly 10 years!
