Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi from new Melbourne forum member

    Hey guys.

    Firstly i should start by mentioning that i don't own a VW......yet.

I have had various hot hatch's but mainly Peugeot and Renault and I'm a member on Ozrenaultsport.com.

The reason i have joined here is that i am considering restoring my grandfathers type 3 fastback.

it is a '71 and i know that its not worth much but its more for sentimental reasons.

That said, im kind of looking for some advice from other people that would know more than me about these cars (i don't know much). Where to start, Do and Dont's and that sort of thing.

the car is currently in Adelaide but im considering having it sent to Melbourne.

anyway, hi and thanks for your help in advance.

    aircooled?

    Hi Micah,

You might be on the wrong forum for aircooled advice. There are others out there, but I no longer have aircooled VW's, so I can't suggest which are the best ones, You might want to consider joining the Volkswagen Club of Victoria ( www.vwclub.com.au ). There you will meet a number of specialist VW workshop owners/mechanics who are also genuine enthusiasts. Nearest to you that comes to mind would be Lawrence at J & D Motors in Richmond, but there are several others. It depends a lot on whether you want to do an 'original' restoration, or go radical as some have inclinations one way or the other. As a VWCV member you will also have the option of 'club' registration for a car that old (about $100/year instead of $600, but with some restrictions on use.)
The old type 3's are having a bit of a resurgence in popularity, so don't discount its value. Transporting cars interstate can be expensive (? $500 - $1k), unless you have some good contacts. If it's been in regular use, and is reasonably sound, I think a road trip might be in order. They used to cruise pretty well in their day.

VW's are pretty easy to work on, resonably basic, and you can still get heaps of parts for them (not nessecarily cheap though)

look on http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/ they'll have more specific info about air coolers.

Being a 71 fasty, I dont think that's it's particularily rare or valuable model, so I definatly think it would be nice to restore for sentimental reasons (depending on the condition it's currently in, budget, skills etc etc etc)

      hope that helps.
