Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Yet another WA Newbie

    Hi all,

Just though I'd introduce myself being a VW newbie. I recently bought my first VW, a 2004 Golf 2.0L FSI 6 speed manual...and I absolutely love it!

    Other Car is
    1966 Mustang Coupe 289 V8

    Regards
    Charlie

      ok here's the cars....
Mustang is a totally stock 1969 coupe running 289 V8 and a 3speed auto. have had it for about 5 years, originally from Nevada, I had it shipped over and all the resto work done on it here in Perth.
The Golf is a 2004 2.0L FSI 6 speed Manual. Have had it nearly 2 weeks... still working out how to operate all the features it has! Not sure on what I want to do to it yet as I dont have much experience with late model performance add-ons. I have to do a bit of research to see what people are doing, and what they get out of it

yeah, round the track it would be quicker but in a straight line quarter mile drag i would put money on the mustang.
I saw my first golf in full flight round the collie motorplex on a track day for the mustangs. One of the guys also had a mk4 r32 and it blitzed the competition round the track, bar one mustang which was a 1969 mach1 running a modified 390 cubic inch motor... and the driver of the mustang also had a cams licence so he was used to circuit racing...it was also a tight circuit so no long straights for the V8's to stretch their legs....and as most people know american muscle cars dont handle to well round a circuit!
gotta say i lovem both for different reasons... nothing like cruising down the coast on a summers evening, windows down, in the mustang listening to the burble of the V8 exhaust note...and the golf is so surprisingly agile, fun to drive and a hell of a lot more comfortable and economical than the mustang.

i like the shape of the older cars like mustangs, but I'm not keen on the older things like big steering wheels, vinyl (often bench) seats, drum brakes etc etc.

and the yanks are renowned for not liking corners LOL

yeah going 100mph with non power assisted 4 wheel drums, non colapsable steering wheel, a basic lap belt and handling like a tug boat is real edge of your seat racing!
With getting the golf, the mustang is now relegated to be a weekend boulevard cruiser!
