I'll be lurking around till I can decide whether I should get GTI MK VI or wait until GTI-R is out.

I'm driving a Honda S2000 atm

tough decision, the GTI is cheaper and so leaves cash for tuning up to R's performance if that is your thing.

However, the R will be a higher marque.

also the GTI is already out there and may be subject to discounting, whereas the R won''t be discounted for a while after its release, so the differential may be larger for a while.

In the menatime, think about an Audi S3 which is a higher marque again and already experiencing significant discounting off RRP.
