Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi everyone

    Hey all,

I'm looking at picking up a polo in the next few months and through all my readings I stumbled across this forum which has been a positive wealth of information.

Expect me to be firing off plenty of questions in the coming weeks as I get closer to picking this awesome little car up!

    Michael

    Welcome to the forum Michael.

What Polo are you looking for, a GTI perhaps?

Definitely got my eyes on a GTI. an 06 or 07 model. I was also thinking about a fiesta XR4 but build quality and potential upgrades are the deal breakers.

Nothing much planned at this stage except getting it chipped, but I imagine better suspension and bigger brakes will follow after that. It's almost criminal how easy it is to get power out of it.

I need to learn how to drive a manual in the next couple of months, that should be interesting too.

Depending on the Ks on it, you might want to consider putting money aside for a clutch and flywheel.

I know of a hard driven one that didn't survive chipping

Brakes are not such a biggy IMO. Better pads would be a start though, along with fresh fluid.

Create yourself a long term plan for it. Don't be getting it chipped, fitting a downpipe, exhaust and intake and then looking to get the software done again.

Go with the hardware first. It'll be cheaper in the long run.

Keep an eye on the QLD dyno day for performance Polo's.

          polo V's Fiesta

Hey , I too was tossing up both of them but the polo gti got me when i could chip it. Once you've got the turbo bug it's hard to compare with anything else.

Yeah i'm hoping to get one without too many km's notched up. There will be contingency money handy though for little things I might need to do shortly after getting it though.

Interesting feedback about the brakes. I guess my mindset is if i'm going to make it go faster it's important to ensure it stops better, but I might consider some good quality pads first and assess from there.

It probably does make sense about getting the hardware done before getting the ECU upgraded, though i'm not sure how much money I want to sink into it. I am almost hoping I might be able to pick one up off the forums or elsewhere that's been warmed over but that might take some of the fun out of it.

You could always turn the boost down for a while, then crank it back up when you have got used to it??
