Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • NSW Hello all

Hi, i am currently on a mission to buying my first vw. I have recently sold my 1990 mx5 turbo to make way for a mkiv gti. I have been searching solidly for some time and not having a great deal of luck, none seem to jump out and say buy me. I know i will probably regret getting rid of the mx5, but it just wasnt practical anymore. Im sure i will by another one in time though..

So as i mentioned i am searching for a mkiv gti, plans to modify a little aswell, so any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated..

Cheers & looking forward to the stay!!

Ok so now i have finally purchased my GTI, I thought i would post up some info & pics in here
Its a silver 1999 MKIV. So far it has an Oettinger chip & single mass lightened flywheel fitted. Other than that it is bone stock. Although it does have the optional leather interior.. which i do love (as slippery as it is..)
One thing i really have noticed is how soft the stock suspension is. It rolls around soo much! First plan of attack is to rectify that! I have been looking at spring and strut combos and am still deciding on a brand. Not sure whether to go with a H&R + Bilstein combo or H&R + KYB 'AGX' combo. I like the idea of the damper adjustable feature on the KYB's. I had them on my old car and thought they were great.
I will also be fitting a front upper strut brace and lower sway bars.. But all these will come with time & money.
I also wouldn't mind fitting a short shifter (My old MX5 spoiled me there, and the GTI feels like a truck compared to that.. haha) A new set of wheels are also on the cards but i would rather get the handling sorted before the look.

I dont have a great deal of photos at the moment, these are just crappy phone pics, but i will post them up as i get some decent ones taken.
