Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • 118TSI Engine Failure

Have a six month old 118TSI Golf. All fine until last monday when exhaust warning and the EPC light up. Sounds as though was running on three cylinders. Apparently it is and a new engine will be shipped from germany. Not thrilled.

wow, thats not good. hope your looked after.
Why is this happening? is it just because VW are trying all new concepts with the engines that havnt been done on production cars before?

That's really disturbing, Intensive. Presumably it's too big a problem for the dealership to attend to, hence the new engine. Gone are the days of simple four cylinder engines you could diagnose and work on yourself.

It depends what the exact fault is. VW replaced more than a few G60 motors when they first came out. A lot of big end bearings wore out early on.

I think I'd rather have a new engine than a repaired one. Especially if there is a problem, it's more likely to have been worked out and not happen again.

The car developed problems monday evening and was stored overnight prior to transport to the nearest VW dealer Tuesday morning. I received a call about 930 from the dealership closest to work- couldn't tell me when they could look at the car "but not today" and no loan cars available.

Phoned the dealer I purchased from- apology, VW Australia car that day, my car transported across to them, looked at that night and great communication. I know which dealership I will refer to.
