  • WA New Member from WA - considering Golf R

    Hi everyone,

My name's Chris and hail from WA, I'm heading down the path of the Golf R and thought it was time I joined, heard about the site from Swallowtail in the MPS forum.

I have a Mazda 6 MPS which is now 3 years old and my wife has a VW Jetta 2.0 TFSI coming up to 3 1/2 years old. So whilst she is happy with her's and will probably wait for the MK VI Jetta or Golf CC (if we ever see it) I think I need a Golf R.

And a pic of both together!

Anyway nice looking forum (been browsing as guest for sometime) look forward to learning more about VW's
    Cheers
    Chris

To R or not to R, that is the question???

    Welcome aboard Chris

The R is a great choice, but you might want to take a peak at an Audi S3 as well, more expensive, but being discounted a lot right now

Thanks gareth, yeah going to wait and see what the R will sell for before I decide, may have to test drive an S3 in the meantime

Chris, you're just round the corner from me. If you're still keen on the Golf R I'd suggest you give Dermot Munro a call at Wangara VW and ask him when they're due in. You could arrange a test drive. It's going to be a really tough call though choosing between the Audi S3 and Golf R.

hi chris, i haven't driven an S3, but i did have the A3 diesel tiptronic while the allroad was in for a service & i was impressed with how much go it had for the 125kW. so imagine what the S line would do.

I think you need one too, Chris.

I'm in South Perth, let me know if you want a blat in my tuned pirelli gti.
Same engine/turbo as the new R (and basicaly the s3), albeit in a more detuned state from the factory (yes, minus awd too)

At any rate it will give you an indicator of what a few more $k in the aftermarket will give you in terms of performance, even though you'd expect more from the R.

              Oh, and welcome

Hey guys thanks for the welcomes, been a little while since I dropped in here, still reading lots about the 'R' and still keen! Will most likely wait till they're here and test one first before deciding, thanks for the offer tinto may take you up on it some time On a different note I took an R36 Wagon for a test drive recently as I'm not 100% if I need the extra space yet, it went well for 1700kg beast and that V6 engine note is pure p*rn! but kinda thinking the lighter Golf R may be what I need. Audi S3 optioned up is pushing my budget a bit and I'm not too keen on the styling (seriously!) I think the Golf R looks tougher.

Anyways guys thanks for the advice, will keep you posted as to what I eventually end up with!
                Cheers

Update, still considering an R, though am now looking at a couple of low km R32's!

Two reasons 1. they will be substantially less than an R and 2. I think I've fallen for the exhaust note

the note of the R32 is great, but I think everyting else (apart from cost) about the R would be better - handling, performance and tuneability

the R32 note is addictive, I went for a vr6 motor as you can enjoy the sound and smoothness, even when your not really hard on the throttle

                            Update

Test drove and ordered an R today, got a good price so I'm happy!

Ordered a Rising Blue 5dr DSG with 19" Talladega in Silver, was contemplating the black wheels but thought the silver wheels looked better in the real life, the black didn't do it for me! Expected delivery is late November which suits me fine.

Look forward to catching up with the WA crew at the next meet/cruise
