Hi eveyone. I live in Launceston Tas. and own a 2005 T5 long wheelbase transporter. I'm a retired electrical contractor and have previously owned 6 kombi/micro bus VW's. They were all so reliable. So what has happened to VW that they coulld manufacture the most unreliable vehicle I have owned? Wonderful on the road-comfortable, uses small amount of fuel, great road manners and even quietish at cruising speed. So, what problems have I had since buying it last year,(94,500KM) after a full and comprehensive inspection by NRMA in Sydney. They (NRMA) could not have known that so much could be wrong, as none of the failed parts would have shown up during their tests.
1. Turbo charger failed at 97,500KM Total cost to replace $5,250.00
2. Power steering pump failed. (103,00KM) Shaft had twisted and broken within pump. This also caused A/C to fail as compressor is driven by same shaft. Total cost to replace and regas A/C $1,835.00
3. After reading about water pump troubles in this forum which explained about loosing coolant and where it goes to, my mechanic has advised me not to drive the van until he can carry out repairs. I recently drove the van around town only to lose almost the entire contents of the pressure tank. The post in this forum said that the coolant ends up in the motor oil, so this would explain why the dip stick showed that the sump is overfilled.
I'll be glad of further information and advice from anyone who has had similar problems.
