  • QLD Considering a Golf

    Hi,

I've just signed up to do some reading and get the low down on Mk1 and Mk2 GTi's. I'm considering picking one up as a fun daily driver, keeping it stock and restoring it. I beleive Mk1s are a bit collectable and therefore pricey, so mk2 is probobly more likley.

I currently drive an e30 BMW 325i, it has been a weekend car for the last couple of years as I didn't need a car for transport, but now that I do, I'd prefer do the miles in something else. It's hopeless with speedhumps, and goes through quite a bit of fuel.

Hello Geoff how far are you having to travel have you checked the 02 sensor as that always makes an E30 run rich?

      Hey mate

I have 2 mk1's and the thought of them being daily drivers doesnt really seem that appealing to me....too hot especially in summer, being caught in bumper to bumper traffic in one will result in you and the car overheating

I have had a Mk2 GTI, nice car well built however not that quick...so i suggest taking one for a drive to see if it suits your purpose..

a Mk3 with the mod cons, may be a good option too...especially a CL version as they are pretty cheap these days and a good roundabout

Nice beemer...i am a huge fan of the 325is version

I see posts like this alot people wanting mk1s as daily drives which isn't a bad thing but you said it yourself they are becoming rare and especially rare in QLD!

but in saying that i used mine as a daily for 6months when i first got it it was ( then i woke up) great keeping in mind i had 5speed and mechincal injection, the old 4 speeds pull a few rpms at highways speed.

So the rule of thumb i been using of late if you buy a mk1 and you get it home find its full of rust and bog use it as a daily, and if you find one thats clean throughout semi straight no rust garage it
