Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi mate,

    Welcome?

might be worth posting in the 'Wanted to Buy' section after you've reached your minimum posts for access to the Classifieds section.

Which vehicle is this for? How many kms are you expecting the turbo to have? did you have a budget in mind?

Get your post count up, it won't take long then you can get in the classifieds.

      Welcome to the forum too.

There's a fair number of variations in this turbo, so more info will help you in the long run.

What engine/car is it to fit.

        Hi Guys,

Thank you for your replies. Just to give you a bit more of an idea of what I have in mind. I own a '99 Mitsubishi Lancer (yes I'm sorry it's not a VW ), where I've already converted the standard 1.5L motor from a SOHC to a DOHC, which I'm now looking at turbocharging. We have already gone through the same process with a friends car where we used a TD04 from a WRX and made the manifold to suit the Mitsu motor, but the problem we had is that the standard internal wastegate was set to 10psi, which is above the minimum boost pressure we wanted (4psi), so we had to use an external wastegate with a 4psi spring to achieve this boost setting.

The reason I came to this forum is that another guy I work with is a member on the forums, and he owns a '04 VW GTI (1.8T) and when he had his car on the dyno trying to sort out some problems, the tuner disconnected the solenoid valve for the boost controller so this allows the wastegate to open at it's spring pressure, which was 4psi (perfect), so I started to think this sounds like the perfect turbo for my application based on it's sizing and internal wastegate, so I can fabricate a manifold without having to add an external wastegate.

So hence what I'm looking to buy is an internal wastegate with a 4psi spring, and I'm assuming that this wastegate will only work with a K03 turbo, so then I'll need this turbo as well (does a K04 have a 4psi spring as well??). I'm not to worried which model car this turbo comes from as long as it meets these requirements. As for budget, this is a hard thing to say because I don't know how much these turbo's go for, would $300 get me a second hand turbo in good condition and less than 100k km's, that's what I don't know. As for getting my post count up, I personally don't believe in adding posts unless I have something to add, and unfortunately I don't know much about VW's, so it may take me a while to get my post count up, but thank you all for the warm welcome .
