  • New VW Golf MK4 owner!!!

    Hi my name is Alex

I'm totally new to the world of VWs and European cars in general, I usually play with makes form the land of the rising sun, I am a certified Datsun nut and I'm currently doing an engine conversion on my much loved 75 Datsun 180B with the intention of some motorkana events and eventually full track days.

Apart from the Datsun my daily has been a little 89 model Charade which is soo goo on fuel. I also drive my missus MX5 SE (turbo), which is an awesome car for weekend drives up the mountains but really impractical for the daily commute to work and back and so is the same with the Charade since it makes it hard to keep up with traffic!

My partner agreed with me that I needed an upgrade while the Datsun is being built and also the fact that the Charade would be perfect for a replacement car for my dad. So the hunt was one for somethong that could get me to work in comfort, I guess this is where most of the Jap stuff fails??? Also needed something reliable, well built, ecconomic and also had to be no older than 10yrs, also drivers and passengers side air bags was a minimum requirement, and this is when I came up with the idea of a MK4 Golf.

I looked several ones on CarSales.com and then I saw this Black 2000 model MK4 with sunroof, factory alloys, air bags, etc etc and with 130,000kms on the clock plus the bonus of 4 months rego, looked surprisingly clean inside and out so I called the owner up and made an arrangement to go have a look, prior to this I had driven about 4-5 mk4s and when I laid eyes on this particular car in real life something was just different, took it for a drive and was suprised how much better it drove than the others, the body condition is great and seemed well looked after, an offer was made then next thing you know off to the ATM I go to make a deposit.

The car has now been in my possesion since Monday 17th Jan and man does it drive well, it's not as fast as I spected it to be or handle like the MX5 but it's so comfortable and quiet!!!! Awsome little cuirse and I just can't wait to give it some touch ups and general clean up, oh also have to admit the fuel consumption on this thing is sooooo good and maybe on par with the little Charade, the Golf did 380kms out of 30litres!!!!

    Anyways here and some pics

There are some parts needing attention tho, the antenna has some of the rubber crumbling down and the seal on the base is missing, the drivers side mirror cover is loose and has a crack, I think someone must have clipped it???? The gear shifter boot is cracked, I'm no Golf expert but seems like they all suffer from this??? All the manual ones I had driven had this so must be. I also would like to replace the interior door handles for black ones since the grey gets pretty dirty and also would love some new wheels.

Since all these things need replacing and what not I thought it would be a good idea to join VWwatercooled, I have a feeling I will get some valuable info and help as I do with my Datsun on the forums and it's such a great little car that I would like to enjoy the most of it.

    all comments welcomed.....

    Cheers!

Hi Alex. Firstly welcome to the forum. Nice choice in the mk 4. Looks like you picked up a very clean one too. Looks like there is no wear and tear on the body at all. Be sure to check out the mk4 section for DIY info and other helpful info etc. I love the mx5-se, I have only driven one briefly. My dad has a '99 nb Mx-5, they are awesome little cars, heaps better with the turbo. BTW- The south east dub fest is just around the corner on feb 7, it would be great to have you along. As your in Keysborough, for your interest, we are meeting up for a short cruise from Burwood to the show location in Bundoora if you're interested.
