Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey All


    Looking at buying a new GTI. Been looking around and readying the forums. Been getting conflicting info regarding the timing belt and the water pump. Some say it needs to be changed every 60K and other are saying every 100K
    So im not sure which is the correct one

    Any help

    Welcome.

    Don't forget to look at the Non GTI Mk5 and the Polo GTI for comparison vehicles at similar pricing.

    Best to ask technical questions in the Mk4 section.

      welcome mate. If you really like the car get it and do the timing belt. Thats what i would do, just to be on the safe side

        Yeah ill probably do that. Two of the cars are at a VW dealer so might just try to negociate that in the price

          Yeah def do the timing belt and waterpump regardless of the kms unless you know they've been replaced recently.

            The water pumps on Mk IVs are known to give way. Mine was replaced with the timing belt at the same time, about 65000km. Timing belt might be a 4-year type service item too so check age & kms against service history if you can.

              Thanks guys.


              I think for my piece of mine ill just get it changed. I already found out from volk power in burwood here in Vic that they charge $800 to get the belt and the water pump changed. im looking at a 2001 and 2003 tonight at a VW dealer so if i like i might see if that can be negociated in the price.

                  Ditto here.

                  The water pump went first and they did the timing belt while they were in there. For others it's been the other way 'round.

                    Up until last year most if not all European cars which had a timing belt needed to be changed at approx 100,000kms. Thats what the recommended time was as they were rated to last til 120-140.

                    Recently studies show that the belts weren't made to last that long and recommendations were to change them at 60,000kms, rather than the initial suggested 100.

                    Thats why alot of people have mixed feedback. All European cars now should have a 60,000km timing belt change scheduled in their logbooks.
