Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • What a great site!!!

    Hi All,

The time has come for me to buy a new car.

I currently own a MK4 Golf GLE 2.0 from 2001. It's been an ok car. The car handles really well and it's great to drive. I enjoy driving it, but I haven't been impressed with its reliability and VW servicing at Barloworld (Botany) was TERRIBLE.

I've been considering whether to give VW a second chance. So I got on the internet and found myself here

I have so many questions right now, so I think I will go looking in the forum, but my two main questions are:

How reliable is the new 1.4L TSi engine over the long term?
Are the diesels cheaper to run and maintain than regular petrol engines?

    Thanks for reading,
    Shortblack9

    Welcome to the site.

You will find there's plenty that will fight the corner of both fuels.

My suggestion would be to test drive both and pick the one that suits you best. I don't know about the pricing but in the past you needed to be doing tons of miles to make the extra cost of a diesel even out the lower consumption.

That might not be the case now????

Test drives is the way to go.

Personally, I think the 1.4 will last over 200000ks easy. I don't know many VWs that fall apart before that..

      Thanks Gavin.

I took the TSi for a spin... and loved it. For such a little engine there was some real kick
