hello to all............. I am hoping to purchases a Mk.2 GTI as a weekend hobby car. I know that the general thought is that the engine is an average performer at best but I intend to just enjoy the car initially then research some mods to make the engine a bit more perky. I am looking forward to sharing thoughts and ideas with fellow forum members.

Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

gotta love the mk2's
best to try and find one with all the trim attached! most seem to lose a side skirt or front lip spoiler. If this is the case get one off ebay, some usa or hong kong imports can be cheap.
Aussie GTI's are pretty solid, they dont rust too bad.
Out of the box the car aint quick but its still fun to drive. I tend to look at importing all styling parts from europe or USA as i havent found anywhere here that stocks bits for mk2's
They must be the next best thing to a mk1 GTIsimple mod is to put a 2.0 8v engine in for abit more torque

Welcome. Another MK2 fan
They're a rare breed down here, but check the classifieds, there are a couple for sale in there.

Thanks!
Thanks for all the replies and kind words............
A couple of things I have picked up from the forum are the following.........
1. The Aussie Mk.2 has a restrictive exhaust manifold and there are other exhaust mainfolds from other VW (and SEAT?) engines that fit and would improve the breathing. Can anyone advise where a suitable manifold could be sourced and the approximate cost?
2. People talk about a 2L bottom end modification. What is this? And what are the benefits?
Many thanks!
