Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    hey all,
i currently drive a 1987 325i bmw, black in manual.
im looking for a nother car something different as i have had 6 e30's. now dont get me wrong i love them and there great, but i want some thing different and i think i might have found that in a VR6
so if anyone knows, what to look for, how much stuff that goes wrong usually costs etc that would be great.
any comments, suggestions etc will be greatly appreciated. thanks

Hey mate, I came from a W201 benz so "know" the difference. You don't need RWD to have fun .

Like all forums, use the search button, it will deliver 65 million threads on the topic.

Sure it's an enthusiast forum, but there are quite a few peopel putting hard time and cash into their VR's, a worthy vehicle of your time and investment also.

Hurry up and get one so you can cruise on the 10th of this month. See the events section for details.

yeh i had a bit of a search after i posted, seems like there are some nice ones for sale on the forum, they seem however more expensive than on carsales.
i really like the idea of a vr6, do they understeer alot tho due to heavy engine front wheel combo etc? or are they quite nimble?

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The VR6 Golf was never really known for being the best handling or nimble car that VW produced, the VR6 is a great engine, awesome sound, but to get more power out of them isn't very cheap. Supercharging or ideally Turboing them is makes them amazing but its an expensive way to go if you do it properly, a friemd of mine has a VR6 Turbo Corrado and not many cars can keep up with him, it has around 400bhp and runs a LSD which does wonders for handling.

          Good luck with the search.

What OEMG60 said pretty much. I went for JOM coils (one of the "cheap" ones) and have got brdgestone adrenalin tyres. This combination has really improved the handling of the car, though better coils + swaybars etc will go even further obviously.

The ones on the forum are likely to have been meticulously maintained as we are enthusiasts, with things like badgeless grills, stereos, exhausts, springs already completed for you..

this is the kinda stuff i want to know, would i be better to get a 2 liter one?
i know that the ones on the forums are modified to a high standard, but i am a keen modifier as well and have spent many hours on my car so im not that worried about modifying my car myself.
thanks guys keep the info coming,
what about a 4 motion bora? how do they handle?
              thanks

I think the 2ltr will be too underpowered for you being used to E30's.

If you're keen to modify then the VR is still worth considering, but be aware to get over 200hp you really need to force feed it!!!

Not sure about the Bora, they use a 24V version of the VR6, they don't produce alot more power than the 12V but sound great etc. Again to get more power costs big $$$ alot more expensive to Supercharge/Turbo than a 12V VR6. 4 Motion would always be a great advantage, they are basically a FWD that powers the rears when the front wheels lose traction. If you're after something different theres always my Corrado, very planted FWD car and less than 10 in Australia, or an Audi S3, they're getting alot cheaper now, very tweakable with the same 4WD system as the R32 etc, all depends on your budget i guess.

in regards to the VR6 handling.

The factory suspension setup is an extremely big let down. But if you add a rear swaybar and some coilovers to the mix they are actually pretty good things to drive. They turn into quite a chuckable, raw thing to drive.

If you have spent your time around rear wheel drive BMWs it may take a little getting used to though.
