potential golf owner

new to the forums and was looking for some advice..
i am looking to purchase a used Golf V, probably the TDI 1.9L,manual. Any pros or cons that can be offered? Is the petrol engine a better option? any advise greatly appreciated.

I'm a big diesel fan. Unbelievable fuel economy, funt o drive and a must if you do a lot of km's. I do ~25k a year and the extra investment will be paid back in 18 months.
