Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Noobie from Nevada

Thought I'd join in this 'down under' group to learn as much as my rabbit-caddy pickup as possible. Right away was rewarded by an article on how to convert an alternator for the 'W' terminal.

    Way to go !!!

Am in Nevada, where Las Vegas is ... but way south of me. Upper desert area. Recently purchased a 1981 1.6L pickup and in the process of trying to 'cherry' it out somewhat.
Thanks for all the postings .... from someone in America who wishes he was in the 'down under' heaven.

Hey Doon, welcome to the forum.

I reckon you'll have the dry weather already, like a lot of Australia.

I watched The Hangover last night, cracking film that. Probably like documentary if you live there?

Post some pics of the Caddy

      Thanks for welcome ...

As matter of fact, have 6 inches of snow in my yard now. Has been down to negative 10+ degrees for much of the last week; night time that is. Have followed a bit of your problems over there. We are adjacent to California, and they too have fires of that magnitude now and then. In fact, back in 1988, we darn near lost our new house to a fire. After selling it in 2000, another fire did go thru the same area, and 14 houses were lost ... including our former neighbors.

Am ashamed to do so. It was owned by a former Nazi, who died a few months ago; and had not been protected during the last few years. Left out in the hot Nevada sun, and several plastic-rubber parts had melted. No rust or anything; just an old man's type of painting. Extremely few knicks and bongs here and there ... nothing of concern though. Trying to keep it original. Had a/c that had some parts missing, so am in the chaos of trying to decide if I want to remove the rest and put in a simple heater unit.

He had screwed a sheet of plywood to the bed floor, and was concerned it may have been covering up rust or other damage to the bed. So yesterday, got brave and took the plywood out ... and underneath is absolutely and totally unharmed ... except for the small screw holes, and a couple of little finger nail size holes up near the cab ... in the grooves ... which will permit draining.

Had a clunker of a camper shell on it that I've taken off, and that left behind some crud from the gasket that has been there for years.

Incidentally, the truck was originally bought in nearby Reno; and still have the name of the original owner. Might stop in sometime to see if he is still around. The Nazi fellow was the 2nd owner. And you should see his collection of ancient air cooled parts he had collected; at least 40-50 engines of all years.
