Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • QLD HI!

so hello. i used to hate FWD cars, though i owned MX6 turbo,
and i have a 88 y31 cima drift car,and on my drift forum i use we post pics of cool cars, and the other day i saw a pic of this

now i couldnt find a rabbit in aus and then realised they were just mk1 golfs, so now i am looking for a 3 door to do something similar, not a crazy low, but will be close,
let me know the best place to find these mk1 golfs, there are a few on the carpoint and carsales sites but im looking or something cheaper.. they are actually quite cool cars.

    hey mate,

    welcome to the forum

a little info on that car is that its on airride, thats the only way to get it that low, small wheels and tyres lots of tyre stretch and alot of frame notching, strut tower raising.... but all worth it, hence that awesome pic

coilovers will get you relativley close to that, but airride low is another extreme

    cheers mate

thanks heaps for that mate! where do i find coilovers and how much, also have you got any pics like that car with coilovers instead, and what are common problems with lowering this car that low? and also camber controlled by adjastable camber arms in the rear? sorry for all the questions, im in the process of reading as much as possible, i also read these are kinda quick or what they are!

well basically, the rear end has a single beam with rear drum brakes mounted to it, kinda like a torsion bar, so the lower you go, the closer the front of the wheel gets pushed to the front of the guard, also to make camber on the rear you need camber shims, basically angled plated that bolt in between the rear beam and brake system, the beam itself is not camber adjustable

coil overs can go from $700-$3,000+ depending on how serious you want to go, if you like ride quality, get coil overs with adjustable dampening shockers, they cost abit more, over the $1,000 mark

hopefully that answers a few questions, shoot some more if you want
