Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey guys,

I'm from Adelaide but currently in Germany. My fiance picked up the mk4 1.6 highline just the other day and really nice car to drive! Not mu cup of tea since i used to own two Clio's RS, but still nice car to drive from a to b.

One owner car with full service history.

Now i have a quick question, not sure if it belongs to this thread but bear with me. I have found that the gearbox feels little hrm who should i put it, sticky! And thats only 1st and 2nd gear. So i searched little bit on here and google but nothing concrete was coming up.

Some mentioned it need oil change and some were putting it down to gear linkages.

When the car is in neutral and you move the stick around (not into the gear) it sounds like its grinding little bit... bad sign?

Anyway great forum, and hope someone can point us in the right direction with gearbox or whatever this could be.

    cheers

    Hi vlad,
was just searching through the forum - and was alarmed and relieved at the same time to see someone else was having exactly the same issues with their gearbox.
I reckon the side-to -side sticky/grindyness can be put down to linkages needing lube - or refreshing some bushes. (or both).

when you put the box into one of the sticky gears, does it clunk into gear if you drop the clutch a little while pressing the shifter into position?
if yes, then we have the same problem, and I'll let you know how I get on.

In the VAG workshop manual I "obtained" it mentions a pin in the gearbox associated with the clutch that often needs lubrication - fix is easy, but you still need to drop the box off the car... other than that check the gear oil, or, worst case is you have worn synchro gears.

    mix.
