Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hi all,

I'm starting work in Perth in the new year and am currently weighing up the MKVI Golf versus a Mazda 3. Test drove both at the weekend and will be doing so again in the near future.

Strange name for a forum..... VWWatercooled?

Thanks for clearing that one up. I was wondering if I'd ended up in some specialist forum!

          Nice one

Any particular dealer you'd recommend? I've been test driving through the dealer on Scarborough Beach Road and they seem friendly enough

            You have

There's a reason the Golf won world car of the year and the Mazda didn't

But you won't find us biased at all - much

Which model are you looking at? GTI ??

Im very biased. Get the golf. Dont even think about the mazda. If you went on a mazda forum im sure you'd get a totally opposite answer
Seriously, get a golf because its a better car. Next time you are in a mazda look at the build quality. That is a huge thing for me. I hate closing the door and hearing an echo or looking at cheap plastic.
Good luck and welcome. I hope you stay

Had a Mazda6 wagon before we bought the .:R32. I liked the build quality of the Mazda6, and would definitely consider them again....if they ever change the front end styling. It now looks hideous.

As for dealerships....see Dermott @ Wangara (he's a forum member). Never met him, but comes across here on the forum as a pretty good sort of guy.

Vic Park have a reputation of not knowing what they are selling, dodgy service etc. There have also been +ive comments about VP...but not as many as compared to the -ive.

OP is pretty good, but I will never take the car back for a service (only warranty work). Each time it goes there, it scores a new "trophy" dent, and they always deny it.

personally, I prefer the Golfs over the Mazda, as the Mazda seems to be a bit fashiony, glitzy, especially the interior, wheras the Golf is more spohisticated.

I suspect the Mazda will go out of fashion very quickly and the Golf styling will pass the test of time

                  (IMO )

Unfortunately not - just one of the cheap ones as I'm too miserly to splash out. I started a thread in the MKVI forum ref my specific choice.

You're probably right about this. I'm driving both cars again on Saturday so will do the door test. Never had any problems with my MX-5 though.

Nice one - I'll give Wangara a go, although without a car at the 'mo it's a bit of a trek from Crawley. I'd go nuts if my car had a dent after a service though I guess proving who caused it is impossible.

Yeah, VW is definitely more sophisticated. Of course, lots of reviewers say it's dull, but that just proves it's down to personal taste.

And on the subject of personal taste, the wife will be driving both at the weekend, so we'll have to see what she thinks!!!

Great replies y'all..... v friendly forum

Absolutely 1000% correct. Modern car styling is the pits, it's why I like the more conservative looks of the VWs, the Tig is particularly handsome. Like a Golf on steroids.

Dont forget the 2nd hand market!

Lots of good Mkiv and Mkv Golf GTI's out there (or even the Polo GTI) if you are not too fussy about someone else having driven it before.

I saved about $7000 on my Polo gti, it still had warranty and had done less than 10,000kms. was as new other than 1 stone chip on the colour coded skirting.

Great service indeed! That's a kind offer Dermot.

I've already got another test drive booked for me & the wife on Saturday in a 90TSI, but will probably want to drive the 118TSI following input from this forum.... so I promise I'll call you next week to fix a time for that.

                            Thanks again

                              where's the +rep button?

Go to the front of the class Dermot. Take your books with you. With input/offers like that, you'll be there for a while.
