Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    hi, welcome,

the dsg does everything an auto does, without the drawbacks of having a fluid coupling in your transmission. it uses a wet clutch setup and duel input shafts to transmit torque from the engine to the gearbox, having the next gear already selected but disengaged, ready to be changed to. the gearbox is operated entirely electronically, and as such can be used as an automotic (d for dream) or in manual mode, changing up and down gears with switches located on paddles or using the gearstick itself. there is no clutch pedal.

please note this is a very simplified and generalised explanation and not specific to any particular vw model employing the DSG gearbox.

Hi Chris, welcome to the forum.

Short answer is yes, the DSG to all intents and purposes is an automatic.

Long answer, whilst it is an automatic in function, the operating principles are different to a conventional automatic. There is no torque converter, there are two clutches, two input shafts and two mainshafts meaning the next gear is preselected and gearshifts are achieved by engaging one clutch whilst disengaging the other all of which is done by computer in extremely quick time.

I love the DSG, but if your preference is a manual, don't buy DSG.

      Cheers

If you and find an auto box that changes gears in 0.08 seconds, that will be as good as an auto

The DSG really is an automated manual. It can be controlled by a computer, but earlier versions had the same issue as a manual when taking off when the car is pointed up a hill - if you release the brake, the car rolls backwards until a gear is selected and engaged. Quite disconcerting for drivers of standard torque-converter manuals!
