  • Hi There - any tips for buying a 96' Passat VR6?

    Hi All,

I am relatively new to these forums, but have had a VW for some time. I am currently looking at buying a 1996 Passat VR6. Comes pretty much stock, except it has a remus exhaust. 202,xxx kms

Apparently the air con needs regassing (any ideas on cost?) and new front shocks (also, any ideas on cost). Knowing VW's record with the MkV air con, that re-gas could well be a new compressor. Any ideas on how to check that, other than ask a mechanic?

Anything else I should be looking at in particular? I'll be going to go for a test drive in the next couple days, so any advice you can give would be great!

I know the car is ugly as a hat full of *******s compared to my previous VW (MkV Golf GTI), but I just want to get back into a VW. A VR powered, remus'd one would be kinda fun in the meantime until I can get my dream mk1/60's beetle.

    Cheers, Ciaran

As long as its got a full service history I say go for it....its no oil painting in looks, but anything with a vw badge has that 'certain something'!

dont expect trouble free motoring though, have a read through some of the posts and you'll get the idea...keep some spare cash on the side for repairs

also watch out for the auto box, big coin if it goes bang...but its an excuse to convert to manual

    good luck with it!
