Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VIC Hello from melbourne!

    Hey all,
My name's Simon and I'm looking at buying a Mk5 GTi. Had plenty of years of old Japanese sports cars and it's time to move onto something much newer

Have been lurking around here and reading lots of stuff and found some great info.

I'm sure you'll see me around here a bit

      Thanks Tim

I'm after a manual GTi, would love leather and sunroof if I can fit it into my (rather low!) budget
I'm not too fussed on the options really, as long as it's manual and has low km's and a good service history.

There's a very well priced '05 with leather and sat nav and 41000km for sale in NSW at the moment, tempted to go over there for a look!

I've already stretched my budget from wanting something around $20k, to closer to $30k as I've always wanted a GTi!

Yeah have noticed lots of DSG's around but I'm not too keen on them to be honest. Have driven a couple and while they are nice around town, I think I'm a manual man at heart

Also a little bit concerned about the reliability of the DSG especially as they are getting to 4-5 years old now.

I've read a lot on the USA forums about cam follower wear, is this as much of an issue as it's cracked up to be? And does it affect certain years worse than others?

Well as I mentioned in the General Discussion section, I got a great deal today on a brand new Polo GTI
$23,888, was the same price as a demo model, and $4k cheaper than the other dealers I spoke to!

Considering most MK5 GTI's I was looking at were going to cost me close to $30k with plenty of km and no warranty, I decided the Polo was a decent compromise, leaves enough in the budget for a nice set of wheels and some window tinting.
