Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • ..new... SP25 v 118tsi.....or infinite patience for GTI!

    Hi all!

    New to VWwatercooled.

Presently own a Nissan xtrail but get my kicks on a motorbike... but with the crappy sydney weather of late I have not been riding much and I am looking at getting a sporty car. I have previously owned a 2002 Nissan 200sx...great car. But not practical for carrying people and stuff..oh and did I mention the insurance!!...arrrrhhh!

Been doing a lot of research on getting a golf. I was looking a year ago at getting a Mark V GTI. But got wind via the internet of the new Mark 6 coming out early 2009.. so held off.. I am glad I did as the new mark 6 cars seem great!

I qualify for a corporate discount with VW and also good discounts with Mazda. I am sure a number of members have had gone through with the same decisions.

Mazda is easy. There are two basic options for manual SP25 cars: standard or luxury (extras include better stereo and leather seats). SP25s have all the fruit: GPS, bluetooth, 17 inch alloys, metallic paint etc....included. The price I have for a SP25 is $34000 drive away. Standard would be about $32000. I will test drive a MPS ($42000 in luxury) in the near future, but to me... it seems a like it is an overpowered monster with a problem getting the power to the ground..unlike a GTI!

VW 118tsi is another story.. it has so many options... I will get the sports pack, metallic paint, but unsure about ACC and DSG...and leather. Any tips?
Also ... I would love to know the corporate pricing for a mark 6 GTi...I would be surprised if there was any good discounts (and availability) in the short term. Does anybody have any info? .....

How much is servicing of these tsi/turbo golfs?

Also does VW offer an additional 2 years warranty (5 year total)?

Any thoughts of info would be great.

    Cheers

    hey mate and welcome.

i just went down to a vw dealer in chatswood. they said they'll should be getting gti's by the end of this month. they will have 24 cars, 10 of them already got deposits and later cars have a 9 month waiting list. no idea about the pricing but i can tell you that they won't be offering any discounts whatsoever as they should run out by the end of the first week. hope this helps

Welcome! Whatever decision you make, I hope you enjoy your new car when you get it!

Re the MPS, don't write it off - they are a bundle of fun. The shove in the back makes an SP25 feel like it's standing still, and they are a fair bit quicker than a Golf. Once you get the hang of them they are a hoot...

You can make GTIs as quick with a software flash, but you'll have similar issues in getting the power down. With any of those turbo fwd hatches though once you get going they are a blast.

            I have owned a 3MPS for nearly 3 years.....

Great car thats teaches you to drive....yes its a monster..

Not something you just jump in and drive....but its FUN.

            The GTI....nice car as well...

SP25...awesome car for the price...but if you can stretch it...go for the MPS or GTI.

            Which ever car you choose.....enjoy...

Maybe jump on a MPS forum for more information as well.

            Happy Motoring

Problem with the Sp25 is its power potential. If you like the idea of being able to push its potential (no doubt you would have at least looked into it with the 200sx) then the Turbos (including diesel) are the way to go IMO.

I had the 2.5L Impreza (previous shape) and gave it up for the Turbo potential. Don't think I could go back...

                Hi guys,

                Thanks for your comments...

Yes the TSI and SP25 were a tight arse approach to what I wanted and would have been a compromise....all would have been OK... until seeing the car I "really wanted" (GTI, MPS or XR5 focus!) next to me at the lights!!

I didn't get around to test driving an MPS but hear it is a much better car than the previous model. I look forward to reading the December MOTOR MAGAZINE comparison between the GTI and MPS! For the same money as a basic GTI it comes with EVERYTHING!...xenons that turn, gps, blue tooth.....

I also walked into a Ford Dealer and was talked into driving a Ford Focus XR5. Um what can I say!... if the golf gti 6 is anything like that, I will be very very happy! The focus is an amazing car! The engine noise is great from the 5 cylinder engine. But the interior standard seats are not to my liking. Upgrading to the leather seat option is only $1900 but you then lose the middle rear seat. In this config it is only $4000 less than the GTI with a not as good resale value.

I didn't want to wait too long however...luckily I heard about an available Red Manual Mk6 GTI on Wednesday and bought it. Probably paid too much but..?!.... Picking it up on Monday!

                Thanks again for your comments/tips!

                Cheers!

                David

PS: If anyone else is in a quandary. I got several quotes on Mazdas...If anybody is comparing cars. Gary Roberts at AMR Mazda Petersham seems like a nice guy and came in a lot lower than any other dealer. Give him a call 95725000 for a test drive!
