Hi all, this is my first post.

I have always liked the Mk. V Golf and have been impressed with the diesels and DSG in particular. Now I am seriously considering buying one second hand, but I have a couple of questions first. I was referred to this site by a member of http://fordforums.com.au. I own a 1979 Ford Fairmont as well, hence why I was asking questions there.

I test drove a 2.0TDI Comfortline today, and it was awesome. I took it through some twisty roads, mountains and freeway driving, as well as in town. The Gearbox was excellent, exactly what I want out of an automatic shifter. It has great torque the stereo is good, it handles well, is refined, and rides well. It has leather upholstery and heated seats too. Perfect. I have been wondering if there are any long term reliability issues with either the diesel engine or the transmission? I am especially interested in hearing about long term reliability of the DSG. The car I looked at has 95 000km, with a full service history. I'm aware of the timing belt change coming up soon. I like to keep cars for a long time, does anyone see any issues with running a well maintained TDI with DSG up to 300 000km or more? All I have heard about in my research is the failure of the mechatronic units. This is expensive right? Do these fail from manufacturing faults or will they all inevitably fail? The prospect of having to pay for repairs to the transmission is scary. I'm going to test a 2.0 manual tomorrow as well, but I'm already sold on DSG.

    Thanks for any assistance
