Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey,

    Long time reader first post.

Has anyone had any concerns over the DSG box? My one is really smashin into second these days. The cars a year old with about 20k on it.

Also for the R36 drivers do you guys get a buff of smoke when it changes gears when your havin fun. I've tried the alternative petrol i.e shell caltex etc... Just can't seem to stop it.

    Any help would be great.

    Something similar and something not

    Hi london

With an R36 that's done 37,000kms I'm finding no problem with the gearbox crashing, although once every couple of weeks it makes a clunky change when the electronics seem caught out.

I do get problems with slow take offs on marginal throttle and then if I lift off and go again (generally to get into a gap in the traffic) it can catch the gearbox/brain out and the engine goes into limbo for a second or two, whioch can be very dangerous as the gap doesn't always last long enough.

I would say that I've driven this car more gently than any before it, whilst keeping an eye on the fuel consumption readout !

The similarity I do notice is that when I plant it (which isn't all that often - I must be getting old) I do get a smokescreen out the back. I'm not sure if it's unburnt fuel, general rubbish/residue in the system burning out or even oil residue burning out. What I do notice is that I have never ever had a set of nice brown exhausts. They are always black, sooty and occasionally the damp oily wet look. I've mentioned this at the services with the comment that perhaps it's running rich, but no response, although one of the sales guys said that VW have set them up to burn some oil to keep the motors safe. That sounded a little unbelievable. I wouldn't mind researching the rich/oil burning and even upgrading the computer chip possibilities.

    Any thoughts appreciated.

    Peter

      Welcome to the forum guys.

I think the puff of smoke is just general build up in the system getting blown out and nothing to worry about. Flooring it more often would cure that

No comment on the DSG clunking but I reckon to write software to cope with every possible scenario of throttle position, gear, etc etc would be very difficult. Catching it out once in a while wouldn't be out of the realms of possibility in my eyes.
