Hi, Just purchased a 2005 golf 2.0 litre auto ,have now got a yellow engine light come up on my dash! Had it checked with a laptop and am told its the small air flow motor located above motor (its very noisy) .have looked and found it unscrews with 6 screws ,but to have a new one ordered its about $650 dollars!! Was wondering if anybody has had this apart and repaired it themselves or found somewhere to get a low milage second hand unit? Can i have a go at this myself or take it to be repaired? Thanks for any help alan

If it's already broken, you'll not be able to make it worse.
Have you got the part number off it?
Did the person scanning the ECU tell you what the code said exactly?
And welcome to the forum.

Get the number and then you can start looking elsewhere. Maybe try an independent like German Auto in Kegworth Place, Melrose Park.

Engine probelm cont.
Thanks golf loon,
I have been able to locate a second hand unit interstate so ill see if its correct when it arrives! The part number seems to be 06F 131 503 B . Not sure if i should fit it myself or get someone to fit it , maybe it just bolts in and then plug it in and get the fault code reset. Or maybe it has to be adjusted once fitted as it has a stepper motor inside i dont want to strip the plastic cog again! Thanks for the offer ill contact you if this one is not the correct one thanks alan

I have just done one of these flappers, i gather you have a 2.0 TDI with a BKD engine number??? intake air control falp motor, very common item for failing. They are available overseas. I got mines for around $550 trade. Shame about this component, it doesnt affect driveability really, but does cause the engine shut down to be harsh. The unit is available from Delphi, VDo and Pierburg, probably find yours is Pierburg.
No adaption reqd either , remove, refit and clear fault code.
Ah just one other thing when these items fail the fuse for the coolant engine fan blows thus you have no fan and therefore no aircon as the condensor fans dont run to lower the pressure in the condensor, this will kick in the high pressure switch for the Air and shut it off, this is when the flap shorts, yours sounds like its close to doing so. Seen it on a couple of 05 Golfs now.
So yeah reset and check your AC any dramas feel free give me a ring
Cheers

I'll clear that code for you if you need it. I am at Parafield pretty often.

Hi Jmac,
Thanks for your reply My golf has a 2.0litre petrol engine and this part is located at the back of the motor ,pretty sure it has something to do with the exhaust gas control not the air intake? Not sure if it connected with the air con set up,but hey i could be wrong im an electrician not a mechanic! Ps thanks Gavin,if it looks easy enough to do myself i might take you up on the offer of resetting it !!!

engine problem fixed!
Just an update, received the second hand part from sydney for $295 delivered to Adelaide. looked brand new, decided to put it in myself yesterday, took an hour and a half, bit awkward to fit but no problems. I could hear it work on start up with no obvious bad noises, but still had fault light up on dash which i expected!. was informed i would have to have the fault reset at a cost!!!
Well drove to the shops a couple of times and was about to take it to get it reset when "presto" i restarted the car and no more alarm. Been good since then and saved me $600 dollars,so thanks people for your help

A fault may still be in the ECU but if the light is out it's no biggy.
My offer still stands if you want it scanning sometime.
