Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi Guys, I'm switching - its research time !

    Hi guys,

I'm yet another who about to switch to the dark side. I've been playing with very high powered Subarus for some time and have decided its time to test the VAG waters.
I have a bit of experience though I've been tuning lots of cars ( edit reflash and after market etc) plus I get to try all the new Audi models before they get unleashed on the market over here, For that matter even before the Press get their hands on them.
So now its research time. Its down to A3/S3/TT/R32/GTIgolf. It must have the 2.0 TFSI (not the r32 of course) and most importantly be able to handle decent power
Yes not really narrowed down much at all is it

    Cheers

    Mark

Oh please don't call me Mr WRX there was actually someone going by that name and he didn't do wonders for promoting the brand to say the least.

join www.ozaudi.com to get some audi-perspective

TT and S3 are very similar, with the same engine chassis/suspension etc.

also add to your list the golf R20, if youre happy to wait another 12 months.

The A3Q is the same basics as an S3, but the S3 comes with a 'roided body, bigger turbo, brakes etc and a more upmarket interior.

its all a function of youre budget.

The R20 would be ideal, I love 4WD and I've been following this car for a while but it will be some time before it gets here so I think though I'll start with something on the cheaper side and work up from there as things progress. I can't see the wife complaining about that. I have seen a few later model A3Q manuals for under 40K now too which is good. I can then pick up an R20 when the noise has died down

I recently did a MkV GTI and was simply amazed at how it didn't seem to feel like a FWD. The build quality was fantastic too compared to my 04 STI. different target of course but I think I've out grown the STY now. I will miss the 350+ Kw atw though
A Garrett on a TFSI is the aim at the moment a small one to keep some sanity

I used to own an MY99 WRX and also looking at a new (2nd hand) car. I looked at the recent WRX, current model and MY07. Interiors are still as crap as my old MY99. Two big pluses for the rex are the mighty engine and AWD. But I weighed that against refinement of the Golf and the Golf won. Most modern cars have ESP now and the GTI torque at low RPM is phenomenal. I drove an R32 and could not justify the extra spend over the GTI. The S3 could sit in that same rationale, though I have never looked at it closely or driven it. I am thinking GTI and if it isnt enough juice, chip it.

I had an MY99 as well I'n some ways it was better than the newer ones for sure mainly due to its light weight I guess
I'm quite lucky, I have the good fortune of being able to tune the car myself on a nice new 4WD dyno as well at zero cost so my options are fairly broad.
Just scouring carsales today I still can't decide which way to go. The S3's are the ones to go for BUT the cost difference above an A3 Quattro is pretty high IMO. Then again I have become used to decent brakes and a very strong engine with the STI so...... however I'd be ditching the turbo and IC anyway maybe I could pick up some brakes for an A3. The K04 is pretty small I have a Garrett GT35R on mine atm so I'm used to a 'touch of lag'

Back to the R32 though. The MkV R32 has one of the nicest seating postions I've come across.(The best one IMO is the latest RS4) It just felt right, lots of headroom and the rest so then I'm back to these....but the mods required are too many for decent reliable power from an N/A motor and I'm sort of over built motors

Crossing back to the GTIs and also to look at the Pirellis. The 2L GTI's are really good value the pirellis not quite as cheap and they push closer to 4WD S3 territory but from the threads I've seen they have the hardware.

                  too many choices

                  Oh Polo's out
