Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • MkV gti or mkiv R32

    Hi Guys,

I'm new here and just wanted your opinion on the title?

I am currently driving a Eunos 30x! And its time for an upgrade!

So I want you guys to tell me the pros and cons of both cars! One thing the R32 doesn't have 4 doors or DSG? And the GTI doesn't have 4 motion drive? I can go on and on and on!

Any feedback will be welcome. Plus the mk4 R32 are very rare!

Look forward to hearing from you guys!

    It depends what you want.

You can get all the driveability you will need from a GTI and with a Chip, CAI and exhaust you will see some good gains, APR is doing some work to get a peak of 370HP from the 2L TSI.

The .:R32 is more of a drivers car with the 4 Motion and only 2 doors and it is also harder to get more power out of due to the lack of forced induction.

To answer your question we would need to know how much you are willing to spend, what you would want to use it for, what power levels you would want and if you would need 4 doors/other limiting factors.

The best thing you can do is to test-drive both of them if you are still unsure and see which one appeals to you more.

      Cheers mate that was fast!

I'm looking at spending around the $32k mark lower the better!

I'm getting tired of having 2 doors as it is inconvenient, I would be using as a daily ride so I need something that I won't get bored of easily!

Last car only took me a few months to get over it! Other limiting factors is I won't be doing too many mods! Unless I have the extra cash sitting around!!!

I haven't test driven any of them yet, hopefully willing to do that soon.

What about fuel consumption any ideaS?

Well the GTI sounds better for you from mym opinion as it will be cheaper, cost less to insure and register, use less fuel and has 4 doors.

If you pop another 2k for a chip you will see a good gain in power to allow more fun when driving.

From what i have heard, it is nigh impossible to be bored when driving a GTI or an R32

I think the main difference between the two is Turbo/FWD vs AWD.

you have to decide which you'd rather live with.

i think the R32 is more of a collectible, has superb exhaust noise and outstanding Koenig seats.

The GTI offers a lot more tuneability, but only starts with 147KW vs 177KW for the R32. (and this tuning comes at a big cost)

the GTI might be more expensive to insure (especially if you are younger)

I suspect the GTI will depreciate faster because a lot more were sold.

Pricing on the Mk4 R32 seems to have held out reasonably well over the last 12 months' GFC

As an alternative to the R32, think about the Audi S3 (8L) - it offers the turbo and AWD. comes standard with at least 154KW and is quite rare. Pricing also seems quite reasonable ove rthe last 12 months

i was in the same boat as you last december..

i placed a deposit down on a mk4 r32 only for the car to be let go the night before the sale was to go through!

I found the MKV to be refined in/out although the mk4 does come with options on a GTI as standard (leather, bixenon etc)

In the end i spotted a MKV r32, negotiated the price & had it checked out at a vw dealer - then flew up to sydney the next day!

Have you searched interstate as well?

G'luck, in the end i would go MK4 r32 - but only in blue haha!

Amz, it is the forever dilemma and shootout between these two top picks. I was in a quandary few months back as well, but after driving the R32 (by the way, I now own a new MkV R32), I was sold.

However, if you are limited in your budget, need to have 4 doors and wanting the thrill of acceleration and better fuel economy (mind you if you have a heavy right foot, the GTI would definitely be thirsty as well), then go for the GTI. I personally find the GTI more lurchy and depending if you like the wall of torque when the boost comes on, it could be a plus or minus. I kinda like the linear torque the R gives me, plus the surefootedness of 4WD. The sound of the narrow angle V6 is to die for.

I also think since there are only 200 Mk4 R32s ever sold in Oz, the collectability is going to be much better since its rarer than the GTI. If you do a search on carpoint, etc... the Mk4 R32s with low Ks are about the same price as a MkV R32 with high Ks (relatively). The seat on the Mk4 R is much nicer than the Mk5, but then the MkV has bixenon, etc.... The comparison just goes on and on.

I think you should drive both and decide after. If you were to chip the GTI, and of course you wouldn't be able to help yourself with the extra weight that strapped onto your Right foot, the economy I dare say would be quite similar.

Good luck with your decision, but whichever you choose, you'd be buying a quality car.

                    Well, thank you Sir, JVLR32.

I personally think your blue R32 looks really hot with the white powder coated wheels and if I were looking for a Mk4, would definitely consider your car.

                      Hi Guys,

Sorry couldn't come on line for some time computer problems!!! Looks like the only way I can come to a decision is to test drive all cars and see which suits me best. Which is what i thought in the begining but needed to hear it from the experts.

Thanks gareth_oau for making my decision harder by adding one more onto the choice of cars! and thanks for the offer I might take you up on that soon.

Will keep you posted on how i go!

                      Cheers

Yeah, please let us know your opinion after you've tested the two cars. Myself and others (I dare say) would love to hear what your analysis and decision is.

no probs Amz. i'm out of town for the last 3 weeks of August, so either this weekend or September onwards would best suit me.

I've also got a nice FPV GT-P for sale if I can corrupt your choice that way
