Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Soon to be owner of a Mk1

Hi guys, just thought i'd say hello and introduce myself.

Name's Michael, but most of my mates know me as Mika. Have been looking for a zippier car for a little while as my quick car is taking longer than it should to be completed and the daily driver is jus plain uninspiring to drive! Was at centre rd wreckers a few weeks ago and spotted a mk1 for sale in the car park that caught my eye. Had a good look at it and fell in love with it, but essentially the car was/is a complete nugget.

So i did some googling, found this place had a quick look around and stumbled across a mk1 for sale, went and checked it out and agreed to buy it then and there. Surprised myself even as I wasn't planning on making a decision that soon! It needs some work, but nothing that can't be achieved fairly easily. Won't be able to collect it til next weekend as I'll be interstate, but can't wait to get it! One very short drive in it and I was sold!

Anyway, waffling away here, but hope to see more of you guys and get some advice in the future as I know next to nothing about these cars.

Hopefully the mk1 doesn't end up being more of a money pit as my other toy!

    See ya around!

Haha...i figured that much...probably not a good thing when one has a money pit car already and the mk1 is meant to be a daily! Hopefully I can get it on the road without too many hassles. Shifter linkages seem to be the biggest drama. The rest I have the patience to fix myself! Just have to convince myself that rust and bad paint add character and that I don't need to remove any rust on it!

and yes, rust does add character! hahha

yeh linkages are a common problem and an easy fix

check the floors for rust, otherwise you might be driving a freddy flintstone car before long!

the more you drive them the more reliable they are (and the better at fixing them you get )

slam it on some fat wheels and run it as a rat

I overlooked the floor...haha. Will weld in a replacement if i have to, or wreck it if it's too bad, but I've already been shopping for wheels for it. Might try find some old BMW wheels or some centrelines and polish them up. All in time though. I'm getting way ahead of myself at the moment!

Thanks for the kind words guys

nah dont wreck it, too many have been going and R.I.P (rusting in peace) of late

just suck it up, fix the rust and enjoy the car

Don't worry...I already have But i might sit on the current rims for a while until i get all my cars on the road or sold.

Problem is I have 2 cars registered already. Pulsar has no engine in it (and hasn't for over a year...engine builder is taking an eternity) and Navara needs an engine freshen up. I should really fix the nav, but I'm doing it all the irresponsible way!
