Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Thinking about Jumping to VW..

    Hi Guys,

I've been following this forum for a while now and thought I'd join and say Hi.

I live in Sydney and currently drive a 2003 Honda Integra( which I purchased new back in 2004) and have been thinking about getting a golf gti ever since the MKV was released.

At the moment, I'm trying decide on picking up a GTI second hand(near new) or waiting for the MKVI GTI. I decision I think a lot of people are trying to make right now.

The main things of want from a car are stlye, while at the same time being fun to drive. I think the GTI fits the bill.

Although my Integra isn't the fastest car in the world (118kw.) Its fairly light and handles very nicely and is fun to throw around corners. I'm hoping the GTI will be more enjoyable.

    Anyway, great forum...

    Bobg.

Integra is actually a very good car already. I kind of prefer the standard k20a engine rather the tune version K20a3.

Mk5 gti is much faster then a base line integra in a straight line. But in term of handling wise the integra is much more nimble, note 1200 kg kerb weight.

I suggest you to test drive the GTI first b4 you purchase it.

mk6 GTI is a lil better than mk5 GTI imo.. but bang-for-your-buck wise mk5 wins.

    Cheers,
    Ed

here you go, buy this enough mods to put the honda out of mind completely, and stylish enough not to seem dated compared to the Mk6

Just realised you've only had 2 posts so your won't beable to see the sale section.

        Thanks Whubbsie,

That car looks pretty good... its in QLD though. I'd have to fly up to test drive it..

kaoticice, Yeah I agree the handling on the Integra's is pretty sweet... I'll have to make sure I test drive the GTI first. cheers.

          welcome.
My advice is to test drive an R32 (even an MK4) before you make a decision. I know a few GTi owners that wish they got the R32 after driving my car

            Hi,

Thanks for that... I will look into it. I actually know someone who owns a MKV R32. So I might give it a spin.

            cheers.

              Ok,

So I just took a MKV R32 for a spin for about 40 minutes..... The thing is kinda insane... very fast and I knew it had a lot more in it because I couldn't really push it where I was. The scary thing is it doesn't 'feel' fast and you certainly can't drive it the ame way I drive my integra....

Now I just need to take a GTI for a spin and see how that feels.

                Haha, you've done it now.

You'll be completely unsatisfied until you get the VW, whichever one it is

Test drive the GTI and see if you can get a ride/drive in a chipped one (doesn't matter which chip - Stage 1 results are close for all varieties).

Then you'll know that the Qld one for sale is even better because it's stage 2 and has more mods as well.

Yeah another friend has a GTI, I'll try to twist his arm to let me drive it .

The one in QLD looks good but there's just a few things that don't suit me.

                  - I wanted the DSG
                  - I want to go for the leather ( never owned a car with leather seats, and kinda want them)
                  - its is QLD, which I mentioned before.

And another thing i was hoping someone could clear up for me.

                  - Does chipping the car void the warranty?
                  - Does it reduce the life of the engine or turbo in anyway?
                  - Is a front wheel drive car with that much power after being chipped still controllable? or is torque steer a major issue?

                  cheers!

                    - Does chipping the car void the warranty? - Pretty much, yeah
                    - Does it reduce the life of the engine or turbo in anyway? - Of course. I've not heard of any major failures though.
                    - Is a front wheel drive car with that much power after being chipped still controllable? Yes.
Chipped GTI Pirellis (bigger turbo) are a handful though.

Is torque steer a major issue? It will tug a little but it won't change lanes or anything crazy like that

                    cheers!

I made the exact same post as you 4 weeks ago, I was coming from a b16a honda myself I was really wanting a MKV GTI, loved the R32 but I wanted to buy brand new and the R32 was a bit out of my price range. Only extras I wanted were Leather and DSG but when I went to the VW dealership I was shown a GTI Pirelli, test drove it and fell in love, I picked up a Pirelli with DSG, Leather and Parking Sensors drive away for cheaper than a normal GTI with the same accessories.

I didn't wait for the MKVI GTI as there is no definate date as of when the car is hitting Australian shores so instead of spending months waiting for a lovely luxury Euro instead of driving my no A/C, no P/S, 9000rpm b16a I gave in and bought the Pirelli, as it's a bit more rare than the standard GTI, MKV and MKVI.

                        Good luck deciding!

Thanks mate..... Can I ask what you paid? If thats not to much to ask...

I like the Pirelli..... except for one thing... the seats.... I really can't stand the tire tread seats...can you get it without it?

                          cheers.
