Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

this thread just made me think, for those of us such as I not very familiar with the differences of all themk1's, is there a link/soite that catalogues this?

Ie. What makes a swallowtail different in comparison to greasykitchens, and it sounds like its the desireable one?

The main difference between this one and mine - the Swallowtail characterisitc - is the contour line between the tail lights. On most Mk1s it is (see the blue in in the sig above), but on Swallowtails it dips down on the inward side of the tail lights (hope that makes sense).

There are also other less obvious Swallowtail things like the shape of the door edge and the lines on the bonnet. I think there's a website called swallowtail.com or something that give all the details.

Suffice to say, STs are the earliest of the early Mk1s ('74 to ealry '76?) and quite rare. Even early ones in Aust are mostly transition models (like mine it seems) or non-STs.

      Cheers.

Yea sounds about right Stephen. we only got a few real proper swallowtails, thier were very late 75, and real early 76er's. Most 76'ers (inc my old one) were transition models, even of the smaller details carried into a few 77 models I beleive.

          here's the site:

i would love to keep it but, cant afford to keep two cars, and can't sell the other one as it is my brothers (its a jap, sorry). and i no longer have space to store her as the old man bought a 911 not to long ago, so the girl lost her spot.
I put her in the paper not to long ago but thankfully she didnt sell as i didnt really want it to go to some kid who might drive her into a tree, someone with the time and love for her would be nice.

I checked this mk1 out a few weeks back, it’s a clean example which would make a great project for someone with the time a patience.

Can back Morgan up on the previous owner keeping it undercover, as it lived around the corner from me previously, I used to walk past the drive daily to the bus stop.

Hope it goes to a good home.
