Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • A Mk1 says hello and (maybe) goodbye

    Hi fellow Mk1 fanciers,

I have been following the forum for a while now as i have been slowly fixing up a 78 Mk1 4dr (i am a newbie that likes to hide in the background working away quietly). Peter from Canberra VW Centre has been helping me out here and there -fantastic. We put in a 5 speed gearbox a few months back - made a world of difference to my red daily driver. I have a set of webbers waiting to go on some time and apart from the usual quirks and an ageing motor it has been pretty smooth. That is until I got rear-ended by a truck at a stop sign 2 weeks ago! The driver's excuse was that he hadn't expected me to stop? I was surprised because I didn't think its brakes worked so well as to be a problem to any other following motorist!

Anyway it looks like his insurance company is going to write it off for some agreed value (whatever that might be??). It is still fully drivable and the damage isnt too bad (worst of all he stuffed a good chrome bumper bar) but I dont know if it would be worth hanging on to the wreck and getting it panel beaten and sprayed again or just take the $s and start again.

I will post some pics in the next few days when I can face it.

    Cheers

    Paul

    Shattered to hear mate. tragic.

Perhaps it's easier, or atleast more cost effective to find another 4 door shell, and transfer your good bits over & keep the wrecked car as a parts car or something similar.

hopefully this wont be the end!
