Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Whats missing from this photo ?

I have a 97 Golf that i got from work, and when i opened the bonnet it looks like the PCV pipes are missing, are they important ?
Its runs ok but idles rough.
Would that have anything to do with it?
    Will it cause damage?
Does any one know if there was a "T" piece or valve missing. I cant find a pic any were to compare it too.
Any help you could give would be great. thanks

As a suggestion, if you have access to a public library you could have a browse through a workshop manual and try and find what's missing using that. It looks as though it could be a valve of some sort that would probably fit between the pipe that runs from the engine cover across to the airbox and then the pipe that sits below everything (lowest in the pic) would connect up underneath, basically fitting like a t -piece. There's bound to be someone on here that knows exactly what the setup is but it would probably be helpful if you post up particulars of the engines size as well. Another suggestion would be to contact a wrecker and see if they have one in the yard with a complete engine and go and take a look at it.

Thanks for all your suggestions, iv had a look online and have only been able to find Mk1 2 and 4 manuals and not the Mk3. I think the wreckers might be the best option. Im not even sure what motor it is so il have to check that out.
There is one parked not far from my house, might have to knock on the front door and see if they are kind enough to let me have a look

If it's an engine code AAM or ADZ, my ETKA says it's part #048 103 493A vent hose. But that's just from looking at the picture. Not very familiar with that engine.

Mine starts with ADV , is that on the list ?might be close enough, is the part a T piece with 3 hoses or is it all one part? I looked on wiki for that engine code and couldnt find it, maybe because its and Australian model, not sure. Thanks for your help

Doesn't look like it's on the list. Should be stamped on the block, likely under the head somewhere.

Or a VIN can be entered and the engine code will come up and the part is very easy to find that way.
