Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi From an SA Newbie

    Hey,

Im currently in the process of selling my skyline and making the change from Jap to Euro cars. Ive had a thing for golfs for a while, my parents have had one for a good few years, mk4 I think.

So as soon as my skyline sell im hoping to start test driving some Vr6's. Living in country SA makes it a bit difficult so ill have to make a few trips back up to adelaide. Ive got a budget of about 8-9k so there seems to be a few around in that price range, just wondering is there anything in particualar I should keep my eyes out for when test driving, any common faults etc?

I look forward to actually getting myself a golf, and getting to know more on here.

    Cheers,
    Luke.

    Welcome to the forum mate.

Have a search on 'VR6', there's been quite a bit written about them over the years.

Major things would be staying with manuals for me. Rear Axle bushes will be shot, knock money off to have them done for sure, don't even need to check them.

Front wishbone bushes and a full set of shocks on most cars wouldn't go a miss.

Cam chains can get rattly and that's costly gig to go to!

Avoid a smokey one and go for one with as much service history as possible. I'd advise a pre-purchase check if at all possible and German Auto in Melrose Park is my personal favourite for that.

Otherwise they are pretty good solid cars.

Hey buddy. Being a VW owner for almost 5 yrs I can vouch for the quality, and the importance of regular (even somewhat too frequent) maintenance to ensure no major mechanical dramas with the cars. What you put in will determine what you get out of a VW - not talking about crappy Monster Uber Fantastic Extra 400KW Sik Bro tachs either!

if you ever see any wank mods like that on my car I give everyone permission to burn it to the ground.

Does seem like there is a big market for aftermarket parts/upgrades though which is always good.

I only moved here in January. Takes a bit of getting used to as supposed to Adelaide but its a very nice place. It will do me nicely for the 2 years in here for.

What were you down this way for mate?

Luke buddy! Fancy seeing you on here haha! Knew you were selling the 31, but no idea you had a liking for the dubs Glad to see you on here and I guarantee you will love a Golf, especially a VR So much nicer to drive than a 31, smaller, neater, newer and quicker. Let me know when your down in Adelaide again so we can catch up ok.

Thats spot on as to why I want one. In everyway its better for me than the 31 and isnt as much of a money pit. Ill miss the 31 but its not a religion like the 31club think it is.

well it looks like my budget has fallen from 8-10k to about 5-6k so thats puts a VR out of range. Shame.

Is a mk3 GL the best im gonna get for that sorta money?

                              Welcome mate.

That GL posted is very very clean and also a pretty rare colour (I've never seen one in real life before).

Good luck with the search, and hopefully you'll be in a Dub in no time at all.
