Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Hi from Canberra

    G'day guys

    I currently am cruising around a 2003 Nissan 350z , Track spec.

I am a VW noob here, so forgive my ignorance

But im going to sell it and get a golf just to get around town. But still is a decent car.
    Looking at 2001-2003 model golf.

anyone have any recommendations or tips?
I believe it comes in a 2.0 and a 1.6 ? I just want something thats good on petrol realy but looks half decent.

Is there anything visually different between the 1.6 and 2.0 Liter models?

    Thanks in advance.
    Cheers,
    -Iz

No visual difference, and yes, in 2.0L, 1.6L & 1.8Turbo (GTI).

If you don't want the GTI then I think the next best is the 2.0L Sport. I think it get larger alloys, sport seats.....a Mk IV expert can fill in the rest.

    Welcome to the Forum.

Im gonna read some articles in the forum n see what the best bet is.

I saw a auto Sport here in Adelaide last week with around 50K for $19000. You may have to be patient.

Good place to start is carsales.com.au

yeh i had a look on carsales the 1.6L varriant seams to be doable under 15K, so that might be my best bet.

My friend Keith had a 1.6 Generation and I was very impressed with the way is went (for a 1.6L).

Go for a Generation if you can, they had alot of goodies thrown in as it was at the end of the model run.

you can get decent golf mkiv's for less than 10k.

apart from the gti, the second best one is the 1.8 (cos its a 20v). then after that the 2.0L (its only an 8v ) and then the 1.6 slow thing

Avoid the 1.6 like the plague. Lots of trouble with the manual gearbox. Look for a 2.0l or 1.8, turbo preferably

I agree. Try to find a 1.8L or 2.0L! If possible, go for a MkIV GTI if it's ever within the price range.

In this day and age an unmolested Mk4 GTI, with it's 110kW, could hardly be called a performance car. It would be a very solid and reliable day to day car if that's all you are after.

I reckon you could go pretty close to getting one for $15K these days too.

Pre MY02 models have the standard Recaro seats and sunroof. Post MY02 models had Recaro-like seats, no standard sunroof and a trip computer.
