Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

Hi, picking up new Golf 2.0 TD 1K MY08 UP1(2?) DSG on (hopefully) Friday.

Lovely car. Hope it's reliable and troouble free for me.

Just a quick question. Where should I buy the best quality diesel for it?

Had to correct teller, today, when I went to get bank cheque. He spelt it Volkswagon. He had to re-do the cheque. Guess that means he'll never forget it's Volkswagen.

Is this because of the cetane level or sulpher level? I hear sulpher levels will drop on 1 january, to 10ppm, anyway.

Any other reason why you recommend BP?

Welcome. Don't think you'll ever leave the VW fold now. Build quality is a cut above anything else available in it's price range.

Regarding your question re fuel, BP "0 ppm Sulphur" Diesel is recommended by VW so I figure they're either getting kickbacks or they prefer the brand. Either way, I've never had a problem with it, but nor have I really compared it to the others as BP is on the way to work (and I only fill up every 800 k's or so!)

Again, enjoy the car and the forum.

                  Wecome CatonaPC,

BP Ultimate diesel - low sulpher - has been in WA for a while now and is about 6c-8c more per litre than other's diesel. I have been driving my oil burner for 12 months now and have no preference or loyaly to any brand. I'm curently using Shell for before swapping to BP. Then I'll be driving from Perth to Bendigo for Easter '09. (btw that's 3335 klm) Aim? To get there on 3 x 55l tanks.

                  Enjoy the forum

Don't tell me that's the manual!! It'll take me months to get through it all!

                        Oh well . . .

I picked up my Mk V baby yesterday and spent today dodging rude drivers hell bent on crashing into her!

Anyway, first impressions are good. I am impressed with the DSG and the fact it changes down, unlike traditional autos. I thought I might have to use the manual selector but now I'm beginning to think the ECU does such a good job, why bother!

Also impressed with attention detail. Remember this is my first German car. Having an overhead light switch on when you slide the vanity mirror cover open on the sun visor might sound silly, but it certainly impressed my wife. The speedo is calibrated to 1 km/h reading, not your usual 10 km/h readings in Japaneses makes. The temperature guage . . er . . actually tells you the termperature of the coolent in degree! The fuel guage is calibrated minutely too but I haven't worked out how minutely yet. This afternoon, my wife got in the car and soon after the car chimed out and the belt indicater flashed reminding her to put on her belt! Wow! Talk about tough!

Are there things that could be improved from initial observations? Yes, the seat slide handle should be located outboard (ie. near the door) rather then near the centre. Makes it easier to slide the seat before you get in. And there should be a facility to turn off the rain sensing wipers. I can just see scratched glass coming my way!

The MFD is going to take a while to get used to. It does everything but toast your bread in the morning!

Overall, I'm very very impressed. Best car I've ever owned easily by miles. Given the level of equipment and safety features, it's good value for money.

                        Now, back to that manual . . . Page 112, Booket 3.1 . . Heating and cooling . . .

You can turn off the rain sensing wipers, just move the lever down to the off position.

1st up is rain sensing, 2nd up is speed 1 3rd up is speed 2.

Takes a bit of fiddling to get it right, and to add to the confusion there is the rear wiper.

Don't forget also you have one of the safest cars available if unlucky enough to get in a prang. MkIII and MKIV set safety benchmarks on release, and MKV has not gone backwards.

You can solve the seat lever problem by buying your wife her own golf, ya scungy bugger
