  • Hi from Melbourne.. well Mornington actually

    G'day... Just introducing myself.

My name's Ivan and just bought a silver mk4 gti and pick it up wed/thu.

It's completely standard at the moment... but i plan to get some wheels, lower it slightly and get tint... from there who knows... i'll be putting in a carputer as well, but that'll take me a while to build

just can't make up my mind what rims to get and whether to just get springs or adjustable coilovers..

so much to think about.. so little money..

    cheers

    ivan

        thanks guys...

i should also add that i am switching over after many years of Honda ownership. my last car was a dc2 integra type-r.. so switching from atmo to turbo is gunna be a leap. and all the funny switch gear!!

once i get the car on wed/thu i'll post up a pic.

i already know what i want for the car, but money could be an issue. my main dilemna is which rims to get.. if i could afford bbs or simmons it'd be an easy choice! lol

        cheers

Welcome to the forum ivan, i to call the mornington peninsula home but i'm down in rye. Must i say great choice to make the swap to vw, you won't be disapointed. There is so much you can do to customize them and still look completly different to any others around, My first car was a mk4 golf then i traded that in for my silver mk4 Bora.

Ok... I've had my mkIV for a week now and here are my first impressions: (keeping in mind it drives the same as all the other golfs i drove while shopping and that I owned a DC2 Type-R for the last 8.5 years)

            Pros... things i like

            Low fuel consumption
            Excellent torque
            Good visibility
            Sunroof
            Comfy Recaros
            Excellent Euro car ergonomics

Cons... (compared to what i want in a car)

Vague handling, mostly caused by a soft front end and light steering
Spongy brake pedal... no initial bite
Pedal positions make it hard for me (with my wide feet) to heel and toe
            NO TOP END POWER
No LSD makes for no fun in the wet
Seat adjustments are difficult when the seat is back. (Specially for a fat handed twat like myself)
It looks just like any other mkIV Golf
            My wife likes it!

            Just my thoughts...

mate i think alot of mk4 owners would agree with what you have just stated there

and dont worry there are plenty of mods out there to make it into a real drivers car!!!!

first mods you should do is suspension and a chip, the chip will give you around another 40kws and alot more toque! and the suspesion will stop the soggy comfort setting VW went with on the mk4

              welcome

                Hello from Mount Martha.

Braided brake hoses will give you more initial bite and more pedal feel beause they do away with the first lot of brake pressure merely causing the standard brake pipes to expand.
