Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Hey guys,

I've just bought my first Golf. Its a base model MK6 1.4 TSI which I picked up as work/runaround car for my wife however as I am a car nut I'm already excited about doing some mods as its a great zippy little car which also looks great. I've had a look at a number of posts already and am stoked that there is a wealth of information here to be had from you guys.

Looking forward to learning as much as I can from the members here and hopefully contribute something meaningful in due course as of right now I dont know much at all about golfs! Cheers

Hopefully your car doesn't suffer the same fate of numerous other twin-charge Golfs...

I'd actually recommend getting this tuned to help with the cold start behaviour and the detonation issues on the stock/factory tune. This will eventually destroy your pistons/cylinders

      Hi Tigger73,

Sorry I left out the fact that it is the 90 TSI which from my research is the more reliable of the TSI's. I'm really excited about getting a few mods done i.e. wheels, springs, tints and maybe even dressing up the lights as there seems to be some nice LED aftermarket options.

Stage 1 ARP tune for engine and DSG will come after that provide the little bugger holds up. Having come from a modified 200SX I will certainly throw a bit of coin at my new '' daily " to make it a more spirited drive. I already wanna get rid of my 09 Liberty family car for a Golf R but thats somewhere further a bit down the road...

Ah OK you've dodged that bullet then. DSG in these is a bit of a lottery. Hopefully you've got a good one. Just make sure you keep on top of maintenance.

There are some gains to be had from tuning but you are limited by the size of the turbo and engine displacement. I'd be more inclined to get the DSG tune done first as pushing more power through the standard DSG may cause it to wear prematurely. First to second gear tends to slip the clutches a fair amount to keep things smooth but downside is that this creates heat and cooks the DSG. Getting it to clamp up tighter/quicker will certainly help maintain life (but make it a little more jerky). Personally I'd rather a little more jerky transmission than a cooked DSG. This is particularly bad if you do a lot of stop/start driving in slow moving city traffic.

Good luck and enjoy the journey!
