Hi guys,

Looking at coming across to Perth soon, within the next 6 to 8 months and was wondering about importing our cars over with us.

Just a bit worried about serving and parts etc, just got to be sure we're doing the right thing.

Looking at the 12 month rule, we should be ok. However what is it like for servicing / maintenance on Audi's..???

I've changed to an A6 2003 year Allroad 2.5 TDI (180BHP) and the Mrs has the choice of an A6 Sedan, 1.9TDI (130), 2.0TDI (140) or a A6 Petrol 1.8T (150).

Is it worth brining these with us (only 2 cars by the way)

The prices seem to be high in Australia for used cars generally, so we thought if we could, why not???

Dave, welcome to VWW.

Plenty of folk ask the same question as yourself.

The answer is nearly always the same, it is not really worth it. When you add in the cost of getting the cars over here, the difference in cost is much less. Secondhand cars are 'more expensive' compared to new cars but they don't wear out bodywise like in the UK, so generally you don't see rusty cars, except 30 year old Dattos.

My mate brought over his Corrado Storm and turbo MK1 GTI. He has had them for years and was very attached to them. Getting the Corrado rego'd was pretty easy but the MK1 has been a hoop jumping exercise.

He had a 40 foot container and got both cars and all his possessions in it. You can roll on, roll off. Which some other lads on the forum have done. This is circa 1300 quid car I believe.

When they get here, there's a mountain of paperwork. You need to get an import license for the gas in the aircon and a myriad of other BS. There is GST and import duty and the list goes on.

IMO it's just not worth it for a run of the mill car, that is available here anyway.

Servicing and parts isn't a problem, Imparts is the Australian equivalent of German and Swedish. Plenty of independents around too.

I've been quoted £1000 for a company to ship a car over, with around $400 dolars charge the other end, plus steam clean..?
Is the tax you pay based on the value of the car in Australia, or is it a landing fee?
If I could get my Allroad across for £1500, and it cost me £9000 here, could I buy one in WA for around £12000 or $25000? I've seen some for sale at $40000 - so it does look good to do. Just need clarification on duties/taxes for import into Australia.

You'll be out a lot more than $400 when you get it here. I forget the exact cost but it's based on the value of the car in Australia.

Looking in detail, a 4x4 is 5% on the value, then 10% of that figure too.
A 'normal' car is 10% on the value, then another 10% on top.

So, if mine was say £9,000 ($18,900), it would be;
10% of $18,900 = $1,890
10% of $20,790 = $2,079

Total tax/duties $3,969 (about £1,890)
Shipping + associated charges = $3,150 (£1,500)

Total cost for one vehicle (value $18,900) = $7,119 or £3,390.

A value of £4,500 > $9,450
10% = $945
10% = $1,039.50
total on a $9,450 = $3,150 + $1,984.50 = $5,134.50 or £2,445

So, on a £2,250 > $4,7250
Cost is $3,150 + $992.25 = $4,142.25 or £1,972.50

See what your cars are worth. Diesels have only just got big here so chances are three year old cars were never sold here as diesels back then which would bolster their value.

Thanks for that. I was toying with getting a mk3 to bring over as a 'toy', but would want to bring my A6 and the Mrs A6 (both diesels!), but I think we'ew only allowed one per person .
